I have transcribed over a dozen books for the Hal Leonard Publishing Co.
I have spent time as a private guitar and bass instructor at an accredited Conservatory of Music, two music stores, three private schools, as well as in my own private studio before relocating to Las Vegas to pursue more playing opportunities!
My playing experience includes, but is not limited to: original funk/rock/fusion groups, jazz ensembles, metal bands, improv bands, and various cover/tribute bands. my performance experience has found me entertaining on large festival stages throughout the midwest, as well as intimate club and casino gigs, private parties, corporate events and weddings.
I currently gig in and around Las Vegas with The Paul Charles Band, AMPED, NO WORDS (Nik Kai), and am an on-call sub for The Jone$.
I have been teaching private lessons and masterclasses since 2004. I have extensive experience teaching all styles of electric and acoustic guitar, including extended range instruments. Additionally, I teach bass, improvisation, music theory, songwriting, and advanced techniques.
Whether you want to learn classical or jazz, metal or funk, I'll personalize your lessons based on your specific goals.

To all my guitarist friends both highly advanced and beginner. May I recommend a teacher if you are contemplating expanding your knowledge. Finding a good teacher is a very personal journey so let me outline my experience with Nick Burbey. I find him to be patient, flexible, versed in styles, theory, fretboard knowledge, technique, technology, and performance. Above all he's very easy to get along with and has a deep sense of genuine concern for his responsibility as a teacher. Additionally, he knows how to make learning fun and has a great sense of humor. Again, if you are contemplating expanding your knowledge and skill I encourage you to friend Nick and contact him regarding world class instruction.

"Stop looking.....Nick is "the" guitar guy!! I would highly, highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn guitar. My son is new to guitar and Nick has been amazing. He is so patient, speaks to his level and really tries to help him understand the basic fundamentals of guitar and reading music. My son really enjoys his lessons and has learned a tremendous amount from Nick. He looks forward to his lessons and has someone he can look up to. Nick is a GREAT guitar teacher!! He also teaches a friend's son and they feel the same. So glad we found him on Thumbtack.

An excellent teacher and guitar player at the same time
When I first approached Nick I was a complete newbie and had no idea what I was doing on the guitar. Not knowing how to truly spend my practice time, read notes or even hold the pick correctly, Nick taught me the basics from the first lesson and eventually so much more. Ultimately, he helped realize a level of playing I couldn't have achieved on my own.
With that said, many things impressed me about Nick. First and foremost of these was his versatile and creative teaching style. He consistently adapted each lesson to fit my level, interests and problem areas. Whatever I needed to work on he made sure the lesson was spent wisely so I could get the most out of my time with him and address those issues that would improve my overall level of playing. If a technique or musical piece wasn't improved on after one or two lessons, he made sure to go back to it in subsequent lessons until he was convinced I was able to play it properly. He never settled for something being played in an average manner, but constantly pushed me to master the issue at hand. At the same time he made sure I was always being challenged with new material to continue building on my skills and in the process would not become bored.
Secondly, Nick is an outstanding guitar player who not only has amazing technique, but is well versed in his knowledge of the instrument and the many ways it can be played. He's not a one sided guitar player who only sticks to a single variety of playing, and I feel that gives him a unique ability to provide well rounded instruction to his students. When I was being taught by Nick I truly felt that I was being taught by a teacher who knew what he was talking about and could provide the best instruction possible.
Lastly, supporting his abilities on the guitar is Nick's knowledge of music theory and ability to make it both easy to understand and fun to learn . Learning about the theory behind the instrument aided my understanding of the guitar and gave me an additional layer of knowledge that I didn't think I'd ever get from a guitar lesson.
In the end Nick guided me in correcting many errors that I had ingrained into my playing from hours of incorrect self-practice and helped me vastly increase my skill level on the guitar. I can honestly say that had it not been for him I would never have gotten out of the beginner stage, nor would I have been able to learn as much as I did without his help. If you want to learn guitar or improve your skills I highly recommend getting in touch with Nick and taking lessons with him. He'll help you learn the instrument on both a macro and micro level that will improve your playing abilities and knowledge. Whether you're a beginner or advanced he'll make sure you master the proper techniques given your skill level, while still making the lessons enjoyable and introducing you to material that will test your limits.

Nick is a fantastic teacher! I had him teach me guitar a while back for a few years and I've learned so much more from him other than just learning how to play! I've learned how to write music, memoriation and finger techniques to play, tips and help to play on stage, and so much more! He's a great teacher and a fun and awesome guy! I highly recommend him as your guitar teacher!

Gifted teacher with amazing skill and knowledge
Our experience with Nick was outstanding. Nick gave our son multiple years of guitar lessons, as well as music theory and composition instruction. This was while our student was in a charter high school for music, and playing for hours a day. Yet, Nick's lessons were the ones he looked forward to the most. Nick treated him not only like a valued student but also as a capable musician. Guitar was not our son's first instrument, yet Nick never forgot that he needed to learn some things as a beginner and others by building on skills of an already playing musician. The individualization was the best we have seen in any music teacher. Nick was able to take him far very quickly too. And, they had a great time. The in-person lessons and Skype lessons were at an equally high level. Each lesson was personalized to our student's needs at that moment in time. Nick respected his needs in school to be working on a specific composition or learning a specific skill or even the need to be flexible with traveling. Our student has gone on to play his own music, as well as covers, at large and small venues in multiple states. He still uses the warm-ups Nick gave him to keep his speed up. Thanks Nick!

Great with Kids!!
My son took 2 group classes taught by Nick and learned so much and really enjoyed it!! After those, we put him in private lessons with him also and he was so easy to learn from and had the perfect personality for working with children! Very patient and kind! Wish he still lived in Wisconsin!!
